Unusual folk art wood carving of  intricately carved letters of the alphabet, each in a unique font. Each letter is removeable. The unknown artist has also carved an ancient man hammering the letters in the same block of black walnut. Approximately 14" x 28". The block of wood is 3.5" thick. Each letter approximately 2" x 3". One can only speculate as to the purpose of this work, perhaps like a sampler, a student showing his carving skills. American, reportedly from a California collection, probably late 19th century.
