Unusual folk art wood carving of
intricately carved letters of the alphabet, each in a unique font. Each
letter is removeable. The unknown artist has also carved an ancient man
hammering the letters in the same block of black walnut. Approximately
14" x 28". The block of wood is 3.5" thick. Each letter approximately 2"
x 3". One can only speculate as to the purpose of this work, perhaps
like a sampler, a student showing his carving skills. American,
reportedly from a California
collection, probably late 19th century.
