Important Gustav Bartel wooden hat press model - all hand made. Note -
There are several wooden mechanical parts and pieces not together, so
unsure if the hat press in complete. There are 2 written tags attached:
One is signed G. Bartel Hat Press received July 8th, ''71 and some other
indistinguishable numbers on reverse; the other is numbered 118578 G.
Bartel Hat Press Patented August 29th, 1871 - on reverse of this label
it is printed "Model taken from the debris of the fire of Sept. 24,
1877". Important historical note: The U.S. Patent Office building
survived its second fire Sept. 24, 1877, destroying some 87,000 patent
models, and as the note indicates, this patent model was lucky enough to
be salvaged from the fire, making this a rare commodity and a great
piece of Americana. This model was found in the attic of the Elliott
Steckel estate, Sharon CT.
