Outstanding American telescope with family provenance attributing the manufacturing of the instrument to Henry (Harry) Giles Fitz (1847-1939). Harry's father, Henry Fitz Jr.,  was the first commercial telescope maker in America and Harry learned his trade from his father starting at age 16 years.  Harry reportedly made an 8" lens observatory telescope for Erard Matthiessen (1825-1903), later of Cornwall NY circa 1880, and according to family members, a smaller version was also made for Matthiesen's wife, perhaps as a gift from Fitz - this is the one that is up for sale in this auction. Note that the 8" telescope was found disassembled in the barn on the Matthiessen estate by his grand daughter Mrs. Beatrice Abbot Duggan, in the 1950's, along with the telescope featured here in its original box. The 8" version has been restored and is now in an observatory in Plymouth PA. The smaller telescope was later passed on to a family friend who has consigned it to this auction. Documentation describing same will be made available to the purchaser.  This telescope in mahogany with brass fittings, comes with its original oak stand, a 4" lens and original fitted carrying case all in beautiful condition.
