ONSITE COUNTRY FARM AUCTION

Complete Contents of the Van Benschoten Farm

Van Benschoten Rd, New Kingston, NY

Saturday October 3, 2015 - 11:00 A.M.

11:00 to 12:00 Noon - Barn Contents

12:00 Noon to 5:00 P.M. - House & Attic Contents

We are offering the complete contents of the Van Benschoten family farm, in the same family since the 19th century. Beautiful setting in the Catskill Mountains. A brief history shows that Jacob Van Benschoten fought in the Revolutionary War and lost his Kingston homestead when the British burned Kingston in 1777. As compensation for those that served during the war and lost their homes, the new government granted land to the "Kingston Sufferer's" in the Catskill Mountains near Margaretsville, hence the village of  "New Kingston" was founded. Jacob Van Benschoten was one of the recipiants of the land grants, and as a result, was one of the first settlers of New Kingston.  Farming was their enterprise and they grew cauliflower and brussell sprouts as well as maintaining a dairy farm and raising chickens.  In 1878 a decendant of Jacob Van Benschoten built a large house on the property which is now known as the family homestead. Family legend has it that his wife wanted higher ceilings than any other family in the valley and as a result, the dining room was added, constructed from cauliflower money that was earned by driving truck loads of the vegetables to New York City.  As was true with most farmers, the barn was considered as important as the house and it was actually built before the house was constructed. The entire hamlet of New Kingston is listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places.

This sale will include the complete contents of the home including 2 attics and basement featuring mostly Country & Victorian collectibles. Highlights include: - several cupboards, vintage toys, early bottle collection, advertising items, blue & white decorated stoneware, many quilts & coverlets, baskets, postcard albums, ephemera, textiles, early blue & white transferware china, spongeware, sleigh bells, butter molds, treenware, old magazines, glassware, china, firearms including Winchester shotgun, etc. Barn & outbuildings to include 3 farm tractors, brush hog, 3 horse drawn sleighs, early buckboard, old tools, other barn items. Nothing outrageous, just good country & Victorian furniture & collectibles.

This will be a good old fashion country auction - no online bidding - no phone bids - no absentee bids - you must be present to participate in this sale. The farm will also be available for sale per real estate agency ..... more information to follow.
